Kenya and Tanzania accommodation - A room with a view

Kenya and Tanzania accommodation

Safari accommodation is quite a unique and important part of the complete safari travel experience. We personally ensure that each property has the right combination of features such as cleanliness, location, friendly staff, good service, and local character. Of course, we always balance this against a good value for money. Our properties are reviewed regularly, and we can certainly vouch for their quality.

Kenya and Tanzania online has selected accommodation characteristic to each country and area you're travelling in. If you trek into the country's interior, you'll sleep in traditional bandas and manyatas. While travelling through Kenya's wildlife parks of Amboseli and Tsavo, you'll sleep in charming lodges in the heart of nature and while in Diani Beach and on Zanzibar you'll spend the night at a beach resort just a few steps away from the surf.

We're also very proud to offer our own mobile private camp which we use for those travelling through Kenya and Tanzania. You'll sleep beneath the stars, far away from civilisation and surrounded by nature. We'll bring along everything you'll need during your stay; from pots to pans to a toilet and a private chef. We believe this is the only way to truly experience what it's like to be on safari and to walk in the footsteps of Stanley and Livingstone.

Accommodation categories

Kenya and Tanzania online uses ratings of 1 to 5 to categorise Kenya and Tanzania accommodation used for modules and suggested itineraries. Most of our accommodation options are rated 2 or 3; good clean comfortable accommodation without being over-luxurious, with private shower and toilet and typical Kenyan or Tanzanian ambience.

Our category ratings are not official star ratings.

Category 1. Very basic overnight accommodation
Primitive accommodation in a hut/tent with limited facilities. During the modules 'In the footsteps of the white Masai' and 'Tame rhinos and the flamingo carpet' you'll spend the night in a 'manyatta', a traditional hut made of branches and straw. This is a category 1 type of accommodation, much like the accommodation offered to those climbing the Kilimanjaro, who depending on the route will sleep in lightweight tents or mountain cabins. Public campsites are also a part of category 1.

Category 2. Simple accommodation
Simple yet charming accommodation. During many of our safaris we offer a private camp as Kenya and Tanzania accommodation; the ideal way to experience a safari. You'll live in the outdoors, close to elements in the heart of nature. We don't simply offer a tent at a standard campsite in Tanzania and Kenya. We use our own mobile private camp and bring along everything a traveller might need during a stay (also in an attempt to conserve the environment): tents, mattresses (in Kenya), beds (in Tanzania), comfortable safari chairs, an entire kitchen, a (warm) shower and a (chemical) toilet.

Category 3. Comfortable accommodation
Clean and properly maintained accommodation in an enjoyable location. Fine hotels without too much ado with an excellent value for their price. Our standard hotel in Nairobi is an example of a category three accommodation.

Category 4. Very comfortable accommodation
Charming accommodation in special locations. Besides modules offering accommodation in a private camp, we also offer modules with accommodation in safari lodges such as the module 'Masai Mara safari' and 'The mountain and the bellowing elephant'. The lodges or tented camps (permanent safari tents) are often made of natural materials and are located in natural surroundings. The atmosphere is domestic, the staff is helpful and friendly and nature is an important feature and treated with respect.

Category 5. Luxurious accommodation
Going on a safari is quite an exclusive experience. Kenya and Tanzania has many (very) luxurious lodges for the 'rich and famous'. Prices starting at US$400 per night are common. Naturally we can arrange this type of accommodation for you; however we personally believe that the lodges in category 4 offer a very similar experience for a fraction of the costs.... of course without the rose pedals floating in your toilet though.
